
The BSMT program is a four-year course with the curricular structure being divided into three (3) years of academic study in school and one (1) year shipboard training phase on board a seagoing ship of not less than 500 gross tonnages.
In the academic phase, the students shall acquire theoretical knowledge and skills in Navigation, Seamanship, Ship General Safety, Collision Regulations, Marine Pollution and Prevention, Ship Construction and Stability, Meteorology and Oceanography, Cargo Handling, Ship Handling and Maneuvering, Radio Communication/GMDSS, Maritime Search and Rescue, Maritime Laws and Personnel Management.
The Shipboard Training phase will be practical application of the knowledge and skills. This is on-the-job training during approved seagoing service of not less than one year as part of an approved training program which meets the requirements of section A-ll/1 of the STCW Code and is documented in an approved training record book.
The BSMT program will lead towards a career as Merchant Marine Deck Officer leading to the highest qualification as Master Mariner.
